Cain, Paul Robert

Seaman Second Class Cain of Delphi, Indiana and the United States Navy was killed in action during World War II while serving on the USS Preston DD-379 in the Southwest Pacific, November 16, 1943. His name is honored on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.

 

Calabria Sam Jr.

Seaman Second Class Sam Calabria Jr., United States Navy was lost at sea, November 14, 1943, as the USS Cushing was sunk in the third Battle of Savo Islands. The Cushing took several major hits and continued to fight despite the gradual power loss. She continued launching torpedoes toward the enemy ships until fires and explosions made it inevitable to abandon ship. The burning Cushing finally slid beneath the waters about 3,500 yards southeast of Savo Island. Sam was from Anderson in Madison County Indiana. His name is listed on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Campbell, Charles Wayne

Private Campbell of Grant County was killed in action on Luzon Island in the Philippines February 1, 1945 (gravestone date) but reported killed in action February 26, 1945. He served with the infantry and was a farmer prior to entering the armed forces. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Carmichael, Dale

SGT Carmichael, United States Army Air Corps, 24th Combat Mapping Squadron, 8th Photographic Group, of Eaton, Indiana, was killed March 18, 1945. The telegram to the family did not name the location for the purpose of insuring the enemy was not aided in any way and a promise of further information would follow. His name appears on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Casey, John F

Machinist's Mate First Class John F. Casey died October 24, 1944, as the unmarked Japanese prisoner of war ship Arisan Maru fired on U.S. warplanes and was sunk. He is listed on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery.

 

Catozzi, Sylvester G

Quartermaster Third Class Catozzi, United States Navy Reserve, Bedford, Indiana died May 3, 1945, as he served on the submarine USS Lagarto (SS-371) in the Gulf of Siam near Thailand. The Japanese minelayer Hatsutaka was credited with the sinking of the Lagarto near Koh Tao, Thailand.  The sub was located in May 2005 and will remain undisturbed. Sylvester’s name is honored on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Cedars, Russell O.

Flight Officer Cedars lost his life September 11, 1945, while flying Chinese troops from Kunming to Shanghai China. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Chandler, Joseph E.

1st Lt. Chandler of New Castle was lost in the South Pacific over Morotai as he was a part of the famed Long Rangers as a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator flying out of the Dutch Indies and hitting regularly the Jap-held oil installations. He died February 27, 1945. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Clegg, Leslie E.

SSGT Clegg, United States Army, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division, of Nabb, Indiana in Clark County was killed in action November 21, 1944, while serving in the South Pacific. His brother, George L. Clegg of Nabb, was also killed in action in the North African theater of the war. Leslie is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. George L was missing in action and his name appears on the “Tablets” in the North Africa American Cemetery in Tunisia.

 

Cline, Gilbert

Yeoman Third Class Cline, United States Navy of Indianapolis, Indiana, also home listing of Seymour, Indiana was officially declared dead and missing in action December 15, 1945. He was serving in the South Pacific during World War II. His name is honored on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Clouser J Albert

Sergeant Jay Albert Clouser, United States Army Air Force, died in a plane crash in Japan August 29, 1945. He served in the 870th Bomber Squadron, 497th Bomber Group and was from Randolph County Indiana. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Coe, James Wiggins "Red"

Commander James Wiggins "Red" Coe, United States Navy from Richmond, Indiana was the skipper of submarines S-39, Skipjack and Cisco. He and crew were lost on the first patrol of the Cisco, off the island of Panay in the Sulu Sea west of Mindanao in the Philippines. He was honored by receiving the Navy Cross for sinking considerable Japanese tonnage and for testing to improve torpedoes which often struck their targets and did not explode. He is missing in action and his name is honored on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Cook, Clarence

Second Lieutenant Cook, United States Army Air Corps, 26th Photographic Squadron, 6th Reconnaissance Group, of Elwood and Windfall, Indiana was killed April 27, 1945, while serving in the South Pacific. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.

 

Cook, James E

SSGT Cook, United States Army, 126th Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division, of Montpelier, Indiana; was killed March 5, 1945, while serving in the South Pacific. At the time of his death his unit was fighting their way through the Villa Verde Trail in the Caraballo Mountain Range. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Copeland, Walter Virgil

Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class Copeland, South Bend, Indiana, was killed October 30, 1944, during the U.S. invasion of the Philippines in Leyte with the return of General McArthur. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Covey, Hershel Lee

SSGT Covey of the US Army served in the Philippines at Bataan and survived the Bataan Death March only to die July 17, 1942, while being held as a prisoner of war. His home was in Putnam County. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Crane, Wilbur L

PFC Crane of the United States Army Air Corps served in the Philippines, survived the Battle of Bataan, the Bataan Death March only to die as a prisoner of war. He was from Millcreek, Indiana in LaPorte County. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Creed, Claude S

Technician 5th Class Creed, United States Army, 5209th Engineer Group, from Shelbyville, Indiana, was killed November 3, 1944, as the result of a kamikaze attack between New Guinea and the Philippines. He had enlisted in March of 1943. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Cross, Walter F

Pvt Cross of the United States Army, 107th Medical Battalion, 32nd Infantry Division, from Indianapolis, Indiana was killed in action November 4, 1944, while serving in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Culley, Robert R.

Chief Electrician's Mate Culley of the United States Navy was lost in the Battle of the Java Sea aboard the USS Langley. He also served on the USS Lexington and participated in the Battle of Coral Sea. He was declared killed in action December 15, 1945. He was from Greenfield. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Darling, William E.

Seaman First Class Darling of the United States Navy was declared killed in action December 15, 1945. He served aboard the USS Houston (CA-30) and was actually killed in action March 1, 1942 in the Battle of Sunda Strait. He was from North Vernon. His name appears on the Tablets of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Dawson Joseph A

Private Joseph A Dawson, United States Army Air Force, served in the Signal Air Warning Company. He died October 24, 1944, as the Arisan Maru, an unmarked Japanese prisoner of war ship was sunk by American warplanes after it fired on them. Joseph was from Knox County Indiana. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Dawson Joseph Michael

Seaman Second Class Dawson, Indianapolis, Indiana was killed as he was serving on the USS Quincy (CA-39) at the Battle of Savo Island. The ship was sunk August 9, 1942. Since the fate of the crew was not immediately known because they could have been prisoners of war, a death date was given as August 10, 1943, one year after the tragedy. His name appears on the “Tablets of the Missing” at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Deck, Anthony Lawrence Jr.

Fireman First Class Deck, USN, of Kokomo died December 18, 1944, as a result of drowning while in the service of his country. He was buried at sea. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Diefenbach Rudolph

Staff Sergeant Rudolph Diefenbach of the United States Army, 151st Regiment, and 38th Infantry Division was killed February 10, 1945, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. He was from just south of Batesville Indiana in Ripley County. He is buried in the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Dishon, Warren W

TSGT Dishon, United States Army Air Corps, 672nd Bomber Squadron, 417th Bomber Group Heavy of Gibson County Indiana was killed September 9, 1944, while serving in the south Pacific during World War II. He is missing or buried at sea. His name is honored on the “Tablets of the Missing” at Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.

 

Dobkins, Mack

Machinist's Mate Second Class Dobkins, USN, was declared killed in action December 15, 1945, but actually died March 1, 1942, while serving aboard the USS Houston in the Battle of Sunda Strait. He was from Marion County. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Dorraugh, Thomas F.

Pharmacist's Mate First Class Dorraugh, USN, was reported missing in action July 18, 1943, when his ship was torpedoed off the coast of Rendova Island in the Battle of the Solomon Islands. His home was in Linton. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Downard, Thomas H

Seaman First Class Downard, United States Navy, Danville, Indiana was killed August 10, 1943, while serving in the South Pacific. He is missing or buried at sea. His name is honored on the “Tablets of the Missing” at Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.

 

Downey, Perry T

SSgt Downey from Evansville, Indiana and the US Army 63rd Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division was killed in action January 28, 1945 while serving in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. He is buried in Manila American Cemetery, Philippines.

 

Drago, Donald T.

Seaman First Class Drago was declared killed in action December 15, 1945, but was actually killed in action while serving aboard the USS Houston March 1, 1942 in the Battle of Sunda Strait. He was from Indianapolis.  His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Dugan, Elden D

Staff Sergeant Dugan of the Atlanta, Indiana in Hamilton Co and the United States Army was killed February 14, 1945, while serving in the Philippines during World War II. The 152nd were known as the "Avengers of Bataan." We think he was killed in the battle for Zig Zag Pass near Olongapo. Staff Sergeant Dugan's brother, Charles Dugan fought along side him in the Philippines and saw his death by a Japanese sword. He got quick revenge as he was able to kill the Jap with the same sword. SSGT Dugan is buried at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. He was decorated with a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his Supreme Sacrifice.

 

Dymanowski, Severyn F.

Musician Second Class Dymanowski was declared dead December 15, 1945, but was actually killed in action March 1, 1942, aboard the USS Houston in the Battle of Sunda Strait. He was from Gary. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Elfreich, Harold Hardin

Seaman First Class Elfreich, United States Navy Reserve, of Evansville, Indiana, was declared dead April 12, 1946, after being missing for a considerable length of time. His name is honored on the “Tablets of the Missing” at Manila American Cemetery, Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal with two gold stars.

 

Enders, Robert K

Technical Sergeant Enders, United States Army Air Corps, 319th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group Heavy, of Terre Haute, Indiana was killed June 23, 1943. He earned the Air Medal and a Purple Heart. He is officially listed as missing in action and his name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Englert, Harry Joseph

Seaman First Class Englert served in the European and Pacific theaters and was killed in the Second Battle of the Philippines. He is buried at sea with 436 comrades. He was from Lafayette. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.

 

Ent, Norman C.

Ship’s Clerk Second Class Ent was lost in action of February 11, 1945, when the LST 557 was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea. They were on their way to the Lingayen Gulf beachhead in the Philippines in MacArthur’s promised return to the country’s largest island to liberate the citizenry from the atrocities of the Japanese occupation. His home was in Milan. His name appears on the "Tablets of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
