Private First Class Brooks, United States Army Air Corps, 48th Materiel Squadron, of Alton, Indiana, appears to have died at the battle for Bataan according to family records that we do not dispute. Although the DOD is not corresponding it may be a date the War Department set as a time to start benefits to his family if they didn’t know his fate. The DOD is October 8, 1944. The date is two and a half years after Bataan fell to the Japanese April 9, 1942 and prior to the invasion when the American Forces returned to the Philippines, October 20, 1944. There are several possibilities. His remains could have been unidentifiable, he could have died a guerrilla fighter, he could have been killed as the American Forces advanced to Leyte in the Philippines or the DOD could be that of a date set by the War Department to commence family benefits.
